Round LED Display Changed My Bar Forever | Real Bar Owner’s Story

July 10, 2025

Circular LED display screen: A “ridiculous thing” I never thought would change my life

I’m not a very reliable person. This is not self-mockery but an objective statement. My life is a collection of chaotic inspirations: my place looks like a tornado hit it, the trunk of my car is always filled with fried chicken bones from half a year ago, and my business plans are as numerous as a post-it note rainforest, but the ones I have actually carried out… You know.

So, when I first decided to install a round LED display, my friends’ first reaction was: “Are you trying to spend money again?”

I think so too, to be honest.

But do you know? Sometimes, an inadvertent decision is like a seemingly harmless popcorn that, with a pop, sets the entire cinema on fire.

That thing first appeared in my life in an airport waiting hall

That day, I was still hungover and sat in Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta with heavy eyelids, clutching a cup of warm Starbucks in my hand. Above is a circular LED screen with a diameter of 1.5 meters, slowly rotating on the ceiling, like the eyes of the universe, slowly presenting the city’s night view and weather map. It doesn’t glow or dazzle, but when I had a splitting headache, it actually made me stare at it for a full five minutes.

When I came to my senses, I actually began to write down the renovation plan for my bar in my memo.

This incident made me alert: perhaps I underestimated the existence of circular display screens.

What does my bar look like? To put it nicely, it’s called “retro industrial style”; to put it bluntly, it’s a “half-finished project”.

I’ve been running a bar for many years. The location doesn’t matter. Anyway, you might not notice it if you pass by. I used to always want to create a unique atmosphere, but my understanding of “uniqueness” was basically that the lights were a bit powdering and the tables were painted black.

Later, I spent several thousand dollars installing a circle of LED strips, thinking that they could run subtitles, display menus and create an atmosphere. The result? No one is watching. When guests come in, they just start drinking. No one cares how high-definition your row of text is at all.

One day, my mind suddenly went blank and I asked a friend of mine who does decoration, “If I replace the chandelier in the middle of the ceiling with a circular LED display screen, would it look…” “Awesome?” ”

He spat out a mouthful of coffee on the spot, but three weeks later, my 60-inch round LED display was hung in the center of our bar.

I almost went crazy on the day of installation, but the result was really unexpected

That thing was heavier, more complicated and more expensive than I had imagined, but when I first saw it light up, the entire space seemed to suddenly have an mood. We set the screen to a slow-motion star trail animation and added low-frequency electronic background music. That night, everyone who came shook their heads and swayed to the rhythm of the screen.

A girl was leaning against the bar counter, lost in thought, staring at the screen. I walked over to talk to her. She said, “I just thought this was a skylight from which I could see the Milky Way outside.”

After hearing this, I was both moved and goosebumps fell all over the ground. You say you can create this feeling just by relying on the menu and wine list?

Later, I found out that this circular LED screen is actually not just a “decoration”.

I’m starting to think about how to play with the content. I don’t do advertisements, don’t run logos, and don’t create QR codes. I prefer to let it just blend in like it’s part of the air, such as showing the slow diffusion of ink, the ripples on the sea surface, the images of old video tape malfunctions, or even slow-motion boxing training… You may find it baffling, but when they appear on the circular screen, there is a particularly “wrapped” feeling.

Once when we were having an 80s-themed night, I set the screen to a cassette‑tape style animation. Everyone stared at it as soon as they came in, and even started dancing that strange robot dance without any prior agreement.

Some unexpected changes have also quietly occurred

I noticed that since the screen was put on the wall, the average time guests spent has increased significantly. The reservation rate for the table closest to the screen is particularly high. Some people even come here specifically to shoot TikToks under it. We didn’t promote it, but a local little blogger shot a video of “drinking in the universe” under that screen, and the view count skyrocketed. As a result, the business of the bar doubled that day.

That night, I drank too much and stood behind the bar counter, so moved that I wanted to cry.

I know. It’s not because I put in a large toy. It is because I finally regained the ability to “let the space do the talking” in a less noisy way.

If you are also considering installing a circular LED display screen, here are some suggestions from me, the “a bit of a hot mess boss”

1.Don’t take it for a billboard. It isn’t
It is more like a “spatial atmosphere catalyst”. The less you try, the more effective it is. Don’t let it scroll the LOGO or menu; otherwise, you’ll lose its most charming part.

2. Circles are more “soulful” than rectangles
I really think so. A rectangle is a window for outputting information, while a circle is a container that encloses emotions. It makes people look up, ponder and daydream – these behaviors are more commercially valuable than you might think.

3. Content is more important than the screen itself
Don’t think about “filling it up with a perfect video”, think about “how to create a sense of breathing with blank space”. Slow down the animation speed, avoid hard cuts, and even allow it to “stand still” occasionally.

4. The you don’t need a huge space—just the perfect spot
A circular screen in the center of the ceiling is better than banner ads on ten walls. The key is to make it the “center of gravity” that catches the guests’ eyes.

5. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes and don’t be afraid of being “strange”.
The content I’m creating now is cut by myself. It’s a bit like doing underground art, but I’ve found that the more unconventional the content is, the easier it is to evoke resonance. Guests are not here to watch TV; they come to feel understood.

The last thing I want to say

You might think this article is just a bar owner’s idle chat, but let me tell you, this circular LED screen really makes me believe that space has emotions, and technology can help you understand it.

If you also have a place that you want to bring to life, whether it’s a restaurant, exhibition hall, studio, basement, staircase entrance, or even the ceiling of a toilet… As long as you install the right content, it will no longer be a screen.

It is a “world that is breathing”.
